Hanlon's Razor

No. 17 — 21st May 2023

Idea

I recently came across a mental model called Hanlon’s Razor. A ‘razor’ is a philosophical rule of thumb used to simplify decision-making by cutting through unnecessary noise. Hanlon’s Razor states that we should not attribute to malice that which is more easily explained by stupidity. It encourages a more generous interpretatation of bad results, where we don’t assume others are bad actors, but understand their actions may be the result of unintentional mistakes.

I wanted to share this model because of its potential handiness in our lives. We’re often caught in the middle of situations where we feel others are out to get us — perhaps when a decision is made without us being consulted, or when a coworker delays a team effort. We often assume negative intent when there was none, and come to conclusions that just aren’t true.

Hanlon’s Razor applies well in these situations. It reminds us to give others the benefit of the doubt and have more empathy towards them. This allows us to better develop relationships, become less judgemental and become more rational beings.

An important caveat here: Hanlon’s Razor reminds us to not assume negative intent, but doesn't imply all negative actions come from mistakes. Bad actors do exist, but the razor simply suggests that those are far and few in between.

Insight

As much as we can, we should be in rooms where the marjority of people are smarter than us.

It’s intimidating, but the:

→ knowledge we absorb through listening

→ dynamics we understand by observing

→ feedback we get by asking

→ humility we choose by simply being there

→ relationships we make by connecting

are unparalleled to being in rooms where we are the smartest and others play to win our attention.

That's all for this week!
