No. 22 — 25th June 2023 Today at a glance: For those who are serious about their goals, taking control of your information diet is one of the highest-ROI activities you can do. This week’s Juice Boost explains what an information diet is and how it can improve the quality of our mental state: Information dietsAn information diet is the fuel that powers our mind. Like a nutritional diet, each of us has an information diet — and like our nutritional diet, our current one may not be the healthiest. Information diets have a direct influence on our lives — affecting the quality of our thoughts and our interpretations of what happens around us: A bad information diet is filled with overwhelming, false or irrelevant content. This includes “breaking” news that doesn’t concern us, unnecessary coverage of random events, and mindless binging on social media (unless it has dogs or babies that are cute). Even when we consume this sort of content for pleasure, it distresses us and creates no lasting value. A good information diet does the opposite. It isn’t just rich in high-quality insights from authentic sources, but it is thoughtfully designed to serve us in the short and long run. It makes us happier, wiser and more knowledgeable, and refuels us with positive energy. In today’s world, everyone is bombarding us with information in an attempt to steal our attention. We believe attention, like time, is one of the most precious assets we have, and we should all be intentional about what we pay attention to. That’s what makes an information diet so powerful. It’s not to get off instagram or twitter, or to stop watching the news. It’s to mindfully curate who we follow and what we consume, so that it doesn’t contaminate our mind. Here’s how to start building your information diet: Building a world-class information dietThe best information diet is the one suited to your requirements, your deficiencies and your goals. Just as someone else’s nutritional diet may not suit you, someone else’s information diet may not suit you either — so it’s always wise to tailor your own. To start with, gain clarity on what your goals are:
Doing this establishes a strong WHY. Next, deconstruct your goals into smaller milestones:
Doing this shows you what you may need insights on. Now, you can find experts to learn from. Your goal should be to learn from someone who:
This helps you make progress in the short and long term. The last point is about consumption. There’s no point in going through the process of setting goals and finding creators if you’re not actually going to consume their content regularly. To implement your information diet:
Regular consumption of high-quality content is guaranteed to improve your mental state. Establishing and maintaining an information diet can be time-consuming, but it’s well worth the effort. By being intentional about it, you’re upgrading your mental software and increasing the chances of achieving your goals. Start small and build up from there — it’ll pay dividends for a long time.
